Stress\/strain curves of glass and polycarbonate<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thermoplastics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Polycarbonate (PC):\n<ul>\n<li>Properties: Light, superior impact resistance, good flame resistance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications: Safety applications such as machine glazing, vehicle glazing, and personal protective equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA):\n<ul>\n<li>Properties: Light, moderate impact resistance, very high light transmission and gloss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications: Signage and graphics applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN):\n<ul>\n<li>Properties: Lowest density, high stiffness, poor flame and abrasion resistance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications: Industrial gate windows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amorphous Polyethylene Terephthalate (APET):\n<ul>\n<li>Properties: Good impact and chemical resistance, very stable in humid environments, BPA-free.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications: Refrigerated furniture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PETG):\n<ul>\n<li>Properties: Easy to thermoform, very stable in humid environment, BPA-free.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications: Products that are frequently cleaned and disinfected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Selection criteria for transparent thermoplastic sheets<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The main criteria for selecting the right thermoplastic are density, toughness and processing temperature. Let us take a closer look at these aspects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Density:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glass has a higher density (2.5 g\/cm\u00b3) than most thermoplastics (around 1.2 g\/cm\u00b3). This means that glass is heavier, which can be a disadvantage in applications where weight plays a role, such as in aircraft cabins and vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Toughness:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thermoplastics such as polycarbonate are much tougher than glass. This means they are more resistant to impact and less likely to break.
